Van Gogh Museum

Took the tram down towards the Museum Quarter. Tak larat nak jalan all the way there.

We had to pay for admissions at the Van Gogh Museum... it's not part of the Museumkaart. Ye lah, it's such a popular destination... of course they want to make money. Popular it definitely was... the queue to get in was quite long and 80% of the people on the tram with us were headed for the museum. Nasib baik I dah pre-purchase our tickets online so we skipped all that :)

It was nice to be indoor in an air-conditioned venue. If only ada benches lagi best... boleh duduk. The first thing we did was head for the video postcard kiosk... and did our mini video :) Sent it to Ina and the Detox Chicks. Buat faces je since the video tak capture sounds.

The building was quite big... 4 tingkat if I'm not mistaken. It houses the largest collection of Van Gogh's work... from his early years right to his tragic death. Could see that over the years his style of painting had changed. Most of us are more familiar with his broad strokes, and I for one have never seen his early work. They're more refined but used darker tones. Quite the opposite to the pieces that he produced in his finals years.

I've never been a big fan of Van Gogh... personally prefer the likes of Rembrandt, Vermeer... those from that era. But having seen the paintings up close, I'm beginning to appreciate them better. Despite the harsh strokes and bold techniques, they're actually quite amazing. Seen from afar you don't really notice the boldness... just the scene as a whole. It's impressive!

Here are some of my favourites...

Wheatfield with crows, Auvers-sur-Oise, July 1890

Almond blossom, Saint-Remy, February 1890

Seascape near Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, Arles, June 1888

Self-portrait with felt hat, Paris, winter 1887-1888

Still life with apples, Paris, autumn - winter 1887
