Volendam is a quaint small town, was formerly a fishing town but is no longer due to the enclosure of the Zuiderzee. Now its main business is tourism.. catering to busloads of tourists who want to see the colourful buildings and experience *seaside* Nederlands. There are still lots of boats... but mostly yachts instead of fishing boats. And believe me... there were LOTS of tourists here. There are lots of souvenir shops, boutiques, gift shops, cafes and restaurants.
It's a very pretty town... with wooden buildings dengan triangular roofs. Too bad it was a bit overcast on the day we visited, the sky was a bit grey. But that doesn't stop many from going sailing...
Lots of people come here to pig out on the town's near-legendary gerookte paling (smoked eel). Azlan kata we should try them but I wasn't quite ready for eel. So instead, we opted for raw herring with lots of onion and a squeeze of lemon to get rid of the fishy taste. I'm a sushi fan so that wasn't so scary... but Skinner needed a bit more convincing, hehe.
The fish was very fresh... slightly oily and of course slimy. The bones were fine so we could makan terus. I liked it! Faz pun not a fan so she opted for the fried version. It tasted like, erm... herring lah, hehe. It's not as strong as sardines... and you can taste a bit of masin. I was amazed with the skills of the tukang siang ikan... he was really quick!!
After having our fill, we walked on. Ramai betul orang... and there was even a tour bus passing through the narrow streets. Kiri kanan ada banyak kedai... memang aim datang sini nak cari souvenir pun ;) So we masuk kedai... one after another, sampai penuh tangan kiri kanan pegang shopping bags, hehe
